Completion requirements

TiLT Format

A TiLTed assignment includes the following:

  • A purpose statement - tell students what they are doing; what skills they will be learning/demonstrating; and how it fits into the course, program, and/or real world applications. 
  • A task statement - lay out for students exactly what they will be doing. For more complex assignments, you may also want to include an example of what a completed assignment would look like. 
  • A criteria statement - tell students exactly what they will be graded on. This can be in the form of a bulleted list or rubric.

Here is an example:

Purpose

[Provide a concise explanation of the assignment’s relevance.]

  • What is the purpose of this assignment? How does it connect to the course learning outcomes?
  • What knowledge or skills will students gain from completing this assignment?
  • Why is this assignment valuable for students beyond this course (e.g., in professional, real-world, or future academic contexts)?


Task

[Provide step-by-step instructions for students.]

  • What exactly are students being asked to do?
  • What steps should they take to complete the assignment successfully?
  • Are there specific formatting requirements, sources, or materials they must use?
  • What are the expectations for completion (e.g., length, citation style, submission format)?


Criteria for Success

[Provide clear grading criteria, rubric, or checklist that clarifies what constitutes high-quality work.]

  • What does successful work on this assignment look like?
  • How will students know they are meeting expectations?
  • Will a rubric be used? If so, provide details.
  • Are there examples or models students can reference?


Additional Considerations (Optional)

[Include any additional support or guidance to ensure student success.]

  • Resources & Support: What tools, readings, or external resources might help students complete this assignment?
  • Common Mistakes to Avoid: Are there any frequent pitfalls or challenges students should be aware of?
  • Opportunities for Feedback or Revision: Can students submit drafts, receive peer feedback, or ask questions before final submission?

  • Submission Format: [e.g., PDF via LMS, In-class Presentation, Video Upload]
