Dear LCC Students,

I would like to address the critical incident that resulted in a main campus lockdown that took place last Wednesday, and what I plan on implementing to support and assist our student body. I, having sheltered in place   in a classroom during the incident, understand the importance of support groups and reaching out.

I want to firstly commend those who were on campus during the incident and immediately took action to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you. No one should have to deal with an incident like the one that took place last week, but you all displayed bravery and resilience during an uncertain period of time which was highly admirable.

I want to assure you that the college’s administration is taking this incident seriously, and I am working closely with them to ensure that safety is a top priority for our student body. I understand that this experience may leave many of you traumatized and anxious. Please do not hesitate to contact the Mental Health and Wellness Center ( https://lanecc.edu/mhwc ) for support.

The Lane SGA has received student feedback about last week’s incident and there is a desire to engage and talk about it as students. In response to this, Vice-President Amaya and I will be hosting a Campus Safety Open Forum for Students  this Thursday, March 2, at 2:30 pm at Building 19, Room 226 for students to engage, and share their thoughts and experiences. Students may also join by Zoom at https://lanecc.zoom.us/j/92031921469  (must be logged into LCC student Zoom account).

In the meantime, I encourage you all to make sure that you are getting text-message alerts about campus safety issues. To check your alert settings, log in to ExpressLane ( https://express.lanecc.edu ), click on the “myPersonal Information” tab, then “Lane Alert Emergency Notification”, and then enter your contact information.

Last week’s incident reminded us how strong and resilient we are as a community, and it is important for some of us to process what happened. I would also like to take this opportunity to also thank our college’s Public Safety officers, local law enforcement, and our faculty/staff in their efforts for ensuring our campus safety.

Let us continue to support each other and get through this together!

Sincerely,

Nikhar Ramlakhan
