Sending Messages

message chat bubble

You can use Messages as a way to send private messages to other students or to your teachers. Messages are organized by threads, much like an instant chat program. In Moodle themes, users can access the Messages feature from the user menu or by clicking the Messages link at the top of any user's profile. This will open the Message drawer. The Messages block displays a list of new messages you have received, with a link to your Messages window. Messages are sent via a pop-up window if the Messages block is enabled.

Messaging can be used for private communication between student/teacher or student/student (i.e., one-on-one communication) and, optionally, for group conversations. Messages are organized into three categories: StarredGroupPrivate. Message threads may display under each of these categories. You are able to mark your various messaging conversations as favorites (if desired) which will result in them appearing at the top of your list in the Starred category. Courses that use groups have the ability to use group conversations, but your teacher must enable it in order for it to be used.

Your site administrator controls who is able to message you on the site. If site-wide messaging is available, you will be able to message all other users on the site. You can control who can message you by selecting the Settings icon and then updating your privacy preferences.

take note
If a user you messaged is offline, it will be e-mailed to that person by default. However, if you do not get a response, then it is a good idea to follow up with another mode of communication. Messages can sometimes display on the screen without being read, in which case they are not e-mailed and are then missed by the recipient.
