The graphics card is a printed circuit board that controls the output to a display screen.

The function of a graphics card is to produce graphics and images more quickly. It can also greatly increase the quality of the graphics on your screen. While a graphics card is not needed, it is recommended. A budgeted one is fine for schoolwork but if you plan to play video games you should invest in a more expensive one. The graphics card is connected by an HDMI to your monitor. Without a graphics card, the screen would produce images from the PSU (Power Supply Unit), running a bit slower.

For very minimal work a graphics card in not required. For schoolwork with media or other graphic design, one between $100-$150 is fine. To efficiently play video games you should get one between $300-$600 and even higher depending on the quality games you want to play.

Top graphics card manufacturers include: EVGA, ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE. Other ones are probably fine with research and reading reviews.
