Summer Course Canvas Opt-in Opportunity Open Through September 4

Hello Summer Instructors,

We've opened a second opportunity to select courses to migrate from Moodle to Canvas. This round works differently from the spring round, so please read carefully.

Please choose your summer courses for opt-in by Friday, September 4. If no action is taken, no additional courses will be migrated.
In the spring, we auto-selected courses that looked active by default. We are not doing that this time. If you want your Summer 2026 courses in this migration batch, you must manually opt them in using the Course Opt-In tool. Courses you don't select will not be migrated.
Please don't confuse this with course migration requests previously submitted and any new selections will not be completed before Fall term beings. What you can do:

- Opt in your Summer 2026 courses so those materials land in Canvas sometime in October.
- Opt in a development ("dev") course — If for some reason your DEV course wasn't included in the spring, you can select it now.

Extra Notes:

You'll be unable to change anything already in "migration queue" status — those selections are locked.
Admin Excluded courses removed from Moodle may show up as a course number without any description.
If a course you expect to teach lives in our offline archives, it has to be restored before it can be migrated. Tell ATC as soon as possible so we can pull it back into Moodle and include it. This round has a tighter turnaround, so early notice matters!

The Academic Technology Center (ATC) is a one-stop support center for faculty and staff. We provide troubleshooting, training, production assistance, and a drop-in lab (Center 208, down the hall from J&J Coffee Shop) to support the use of a wide variety of technologies for instructional and academic purposes.

The ATC is closed on Fridays through September 4.

🛠️ Moodle Update to v5.1 — July 9th

Hello Summer Instructors,

Our Moodle hosting provider will be applying a software upgrade between the hours of 12:30am–2:30am Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Thursday, July 9th, 2026. During this upgrade, classes.lanecc.edu may be unreachable and/or slow to respond. Actual downtime is often less (typically 2–3hrs) than the hours allotted, but please plan accordingly.

Moodle is being updated from v4.5.1 to v5.1, rolling up the 5.0 and 5.1 releases (see the highlights). For most of you this is a quiet, behind-the-scenes update — and since courses move to Canvas after summer term, I will not go into much detail as to what's cool or new.

A couple of things you might notice after the update:

➡️ New Activities Overview: a single page that tracks your course content, due dates, and activity stats in one place — and students get their own version to keep on top of what's due. Find it in your course's secondary navigation.

➡️ Cleaner Activity Chooser: activities are now grouped by purpose (assessment, collaboration, communication, etc.), the "Add" actions are clearer, and you can double-click to drop an item straight into your course — no extra confirmation step.

What Else is New?

Course Question Banks: reuse and share questions across your own courses from one place (Course > More > Question banks), plus six new filters to find questions faster in big banks.
Late Submission Penalties: automatic penalties for late work, shown right in the gradebook. (Whether this is enabled is an admin setting.)
Better Grading Workflow: a resizable grading panel, a new "Graded" filter to separate scored work from the rest, and tracking for who's downloaded the feedback files you return.
Smarter Assignment Notifications: notifications now list the files a student actually submitted.
Faster Quizzes: quiz attempts are pre-created behind the scenes for a smoother start.
Editor Upgrades (TinyMCE): drag-and-drop media uploads, more intuitive media editing, and image descriptions up to 750 characters for better accessibility.
Duplicate Custom Reports: build a report once and reuse it as a starting point.
H5P on Mobile: embedded H5P content now auto-plays in the Moodle mobile app.

The Canvas Course Migration Tool will be re-opened for instructors to choose and verify Summer 2026 term courses and any missed "Courses Under Development" that should be included.
