Course Description:

Beginning course focusing on the fundamental principles of 3D design for art and non-art majors. Students will create projects using various 3D processes and materials to explore design elements that include form, balance, proportion, scale, contrast, tension, pattern, and positive/negative space. Students will participate in critiques, discussions and presentations of projects that demonstrate critical and creative thinking while incorporating art historical and/or contemporary art theory. A foundation course for students interested in Ceramics, Sculpture, Product Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Game Design, Animation, and other 3D design fields.

Objectives
This class explores the meaning of objects, the narratives they convey, and the dynamic relationship between the objects, their environment, and the viewer.  We will discuss the basics of 3-dimensional design by looking at, studying, building, and critiquing 3-dimensional objects.

Attendance:
The successful completion of this course will require the effective execution of all assignments, active participation in all critiques and discussions, and timely submission of weekly assignments.  I expect you to be in class for all lectures, crits, and workdays.  For each missed class, a 5% deduction will be applied to your final grade. If you need to miss class, please email me.

I expect you to work several hours outside of lectures and critiques. Typically, 2-4 hours of work a week. You will also be given videos, films, and PowerPoints to watch on our Moodle page. I have carefully curated media components that I hope will provide you with the fullest experience I can. This is your time, and I will not check up on you.

Assignments:
We will build and critique a maquette (model study) each week, demonstrating and exploring various 3-dimensional Design theories. Our final will be a large group project that will take the last three weeks of the term. You will also be required to write a final reflection.

Critiques:

Active participation in all critiques is mandatory. Missing any critique is ground for failure. Please note that all critiques are required.

Grading:
You will be evaluated on the following criteria:
-Timely completion and presentation of assignments. Late assignments will only be accepted with prior arrangements. Any assignment receiving a 60% or better can be reworked and resubmitted for re-grading.
-Attendance. Essential. For each missed class, a 5% deduction will be applied to your final grade.
-Participation in critiques and discussions.
-Effort, willingness to take chances, originality.
-final exam

A: +90%:  Excellence in all areas of the class.  A sincere class leader.
B:  +80% Advanced work and effort.  Exceeding project guidelines.
C:  +70%   Meeting all deadlines.
Attendance of all classes and critiques.
Adequately fulfilling the requirements of all assignments.
D:  >60% Deadlines met with poor work or effort. Disrespectful or lack of participation.
F:  You will have to work hard to get an F. If you make a timely effort to pass this class, you will.

Weekly class assignments will be worth 10% each.  The final project will be worth 40% of your grade. Final written reflection will be worth 10%.  The specifics of the grading rubric will be discussed before critiques.

Teaching Methods

This course will be presented through various methods.  General assignments will be presented through a lecture with a supported PowerPoint.  These PowerPoint presentations are a visual reference to support the lecture.  Simply watching the PP alone is not the equivalent. Often, these lectures will include discussions as the class's interests evolve.  Critiques will be discussion-based. They will be quite long and involved.  This is an opportunity for us to examine the work and discuss many of the issues surrounding art-making.  You are always welcome to record my lectures.

Materials

Masking tape (lots of masking tape), razor knife, ruler, sketchbook, cardstock, and wire.  Cereal box-type cardboard is the best source.  Just make sure the printed surface is not visible through the tape. Black annealed steel 16-gauge tie wire is available at Jerry's in the fence/concrete department (or any wire you’d like to use). You may also want side cutter-type pliers, a hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, and epoxy.
