Course Description:

This beginning level class accommodates the pre-major and non-major

student. This class develops the student's alignment, coordination and

musicality. This class introduces basic and more challenging center

floor phrases, adagios. Given realistic progressive development,

students repeat this level three times before advancing to Ballet 2/3. Class is repeatable up to 12 credits.

Course Objectives:

* To reinforce ballet technique and style

* To develop knowledge of proper alignment and use of the body in

motion.

  • To develop the ability to retain simple movement phrases.
  • To improved strength, flexibility, and endurance in the field of dance.
  • To find an appreciation and discipline of ballet.

Course Outcomes:

Through participation in this course, students will:

* understand what dance professionalism is.

* Be able to execute, recognize and differentiate various rhythmic

patterns through use of musicality.

* Know basic Ballet terminology.

* Know alignment and basic anatomy to execute movement accurately

and safely.

* Take responsible risks with courage.

* Understand the value of community through listening and respecting

the space of the others and self.

Grading Policy:

You can earn a total of 100 points in four categories:

Class Etiquette: (50 pts.)

Be prompt.

If you are more than 5 min. late it will count as an absence.

Be warmed-up.

Be properly dressed (Leotard, tights, ballet shoes and hair pulled off

the face). Be prepared mentally, physically and spiritually/emotionally.

Be prepared with personal supplies (tape, water, aspirin, etc.)

Be present and active for the entire class.

Positive Attitude: (10 pts.)

Listen with your body and heart. Be responsive, alert, and open-

minded. Respect the teacher and the classmates and self. Open to

change and Take risks.

Class work/Homework: (20 pts.)

Ask appropriate questions.

Listen and learn from individual corrections given to others. Apply

general corrections to self.

Integrate specific corrections in a timely way.

Make the dance your own.

“Really Dance” from the beginning to the end of the class. Learn and

practice the positions of the body.

Other: (20 pts.)

-Two Quizzes (20 pts. each)

Eugene Ballet: Dracula, November 1,2 Hult Center.

General Assignments:

The lecture/lab is primarily an activity class where concepts are

presented and practiced in class. Skills and abilities are developed

during class throughout the term.

Attendance Policy

For classes meeting twice a week, two absences are allowed with no

impact on your grade. Every other absence drops your grade one

letter. Being more than five minutes late equals one absence. Arriving

late to class requires instructor’s permission to participate in class that

day. When illness or injury prevents participation, students may watch

class twice only, and not be marked absent. If after two times, you still cannot participate, it is suggested you change your grade option to

Pass/No Pass or Audit. Always communicate with your instructor and

advisor when your ability to succeed is challenged.

Beyond the allotted two absences, two makeups are allowed.

These must be completed by week 8, before the schedule change

deadline.
