This class is about minerals, rocks, volcanoes, plutons, earthquakes, folds and faults, and plate tectonics. It is an introductory geology course with a lab component that will be delivered through slides, online geologic maps, websites, and videos. By the end of the class, students will learn how to identify various minerals and rocks based on specific properties, compositions etc. Furthermore, they will have an introduction to the different types of volcanoes and plutonic intrusions with an understanding why and how they form. Folds and folds are discussed in a plate tectonic setting as they form during plate collision, subduction or along transform boundaries. Students will correlate different tectonic stresses with different types of faults and folds. An introduction to geologic maps will aid the students in relating the info to real geologic settings.
