Instructors,
At yesterdays fall in-service AI Toolkit workshop with Kevin Steeves, I made the statement that faculty's ability to accurately assess students using Moodle's quizzes (or Canvas, or Blackboard...ect) is basically “dead.”Â
New web browsers with AI "baked-in" and Large language models (eg. ChatGPT, Gemini) have made it incredibly easy for students to generate answers to multiple-choice, short answer, scientific notation, and even image-based questions within seconds. Online proctoring isn’t bulletproof, and it shouldn’t be applied across the board—but sometimes it’s the only tool that fits while higher education discovers how authentic assessments can evolve in the age of AI.
Respondus Lockdown Browser is a college-supported online proctoring tool that integrates with Moodle. If you’re interested in using it and or the Respondus Montoring Tool, the strong recommendation is to attend training and try a demo of a proctored environment yourself—both to understand the student experience and to see what Respondus can (and can’t) do.

The training will be led by Respondus representatives and will cover:
- LockDown Browser basics for preventing digital cheating
- Respondus Monitor for identity verification and exam integrity
- Advanced settings (including external tools in quizzes)
- The new screen-only recording option (no webcam required)
- Student perspective and data review features
- Tips, resources, and best practices
- Open Q&A
If you’re considering proctoring—or just want to see how this fits into the bigger picture of assessment—this session is worth your time.
