☀️ Summer 2021 Term Courses & Instructor Enrollments

Instructors,

Another beautiful Oregon Summer is on the horizon, and like many of you, I'm beginning to feel increasingly optimistic about summer travel, floating the river, biking, playing music, visiting friends, and planning some needed 'non-zoom' vacation time.

For those of you who will be teaching Summer 2021 classes, your courses are now available to you in Moodle. To help you close out a previous course or to open an upcoming course you can follow our recommended Moodle course Start of Term and End of Term procedures.

Reminder: You will either need to click on the "Hidden Courses" link or search for your class using the CRN# to locate your hidden Summer courses. Student enrollments will be added one week prior to the beginning of the term.

✅ We Need Your Input: Forum Email Notifications

In April we received 267 responses to a student survey regarding forum messaging and notifications. The Results: 77% of students prefer to interact with forums outside of their email and 86% would prefer either a newsletter format or no email at all for general forums. Given the results, we will be implementing changes beginning summer term.

Any changes made will impact instructors who are auto-subscribed to forums when posting replies and/or subscribe to general forums as a way to view forum activity via their email.

Please complete this super-short 5 question poll/survey on forum preferences no later than Monday, May 24th to help us better understand if/how changing this behavior impacts you.

📅  What Have We Learned About Online Classes and Student Completion This Year?

The Oregon Community College Distance Learning Association (OCCDLA) Online Completion Workgroup invites you to join your fellow colleagues at the 3rd Annual Distance Learning Completion Conference.

Friday, June 4 — 9am to noon | Register in Advance & Attend (free!)

All faculty and staff at Oregon community colleges involved with online learning are encouraged to attend. A stipend is available for part-time faculty who attend. This entirely online conference will feature:

  • A keynote address from Maritez Apigo, Distance Education and OER coordinator and English faculty at Contra Costa College in California, focused on designing engaging asynchronous student-to-student interaction in courses. Read more of Professor Apigo's work here.

  • Two sessions of breakout discussions, including Q&A with Professor Apigo, facilitated discussion about best practices in online engagement, and time to reflect with colleagues from around the state about what we've learned (and learned to avoid) in the last year

Have You Submitted Your Summer Metacourse Request(s)?

A Metacourse allows you to combine enrollments from multiple course sections into a single Moodle shell — reducing the need to duplicate resources, activities, etc. in multiple sections. If you would like a Metacourse, use our meta course request form or contact the ATC (atc@lanecc.edu) for assistance.

🤷  Can’t Seem to Locate Your Course in Moodle?

We do our best to keep Moodle synced with instructor course assignments in Banner but occasionally, there may be a delay. If you don’t see your section listed, check the class schedule to ensure your department administrator has officially added you as the instructor of record. If they have, send the ATC an email and we’ll ensure a course is created ASAP.

Want to Revamp or Work a Fall Term Course?

There's no need to wait for an official course shell to be built. Reach out to the ATC for assistance with development shells, course design, customized settings, course migration, Meta course requests, or you just want to say “hello” and ask us some questions. Academic Technology Center’s (ATC) Hours:

  • Zoom: ATC Virtual Support (live virtual help) | M-F 10a-2p
  • E-mail: atc@lanecc.edu | M-F 8a-5p + limited weekend support
  • Our help articles are available to you 24/7.

If you are no longer teaching at LaneCC and wish to be removed from this News & Announcements forum, email a removal request to moodleadmin@lanecc.edu
