Mental Health Tip of the Week: Feeling safe on campus

Emotional and physical safety is on many people’s minds these days at LCC. Here are some tips on acquiring emotional safety while on campus.

  • Most importantly, talk about your experience whether you were on campus feeling safe, on campus feeling scared or off campus getting bombarded with Lane alerts. The college provided some structured ways for students to talk about their experiences (counselors were available the day after, student government held an open forum and resources like the Mental Health and Wellness Center were advertised). If you didn’t take advantage of those opportunities make sure you touch base with your safe people and talk about your experience.
  • When you have some free time, seek out soothing places on campus. For some this might be the meditation garden and fountain in the front of the school, while others are comforted by a warm cup of coffee in a big comfy chair. If you are looking for a new favorite spot, check out the Respite and Recovery Room in Bldg 18 for some rejuvenating snacks, chair massages, light boxes, neurofeedback devices, crafts and a fun atmosphere.
  • Consider making yourself a self-soothing kit to have with you on campus to cope with anxious feelings. Collect an object that engages each of your 5 senses. For example, a piece of chocolate for taste, lotion for smell, a fidget for feeling, a recording of the ocean for hearing and a picture of your favorite vacation destination for seeing. Self-soothing items calm us by grounding us in the moment. Keep them with you so you always have them when you need them.
