Instructors,

Summer 2022 student enrollments are now syncing with your Moodle courses. By default, courses are not set to automatically "show" to enrolled students and they will not have access to your course until you update the course visibility setting.

➡️ Here is a guide that will walk you through how to make your course visible to students.

Hint: To help you close out a previous course or to open an upcoming course you can follow our recommended Moodle course Start of Term and End of Term procedures.

⚠️ Ticketing / Self-Help Articles (knowledge base) Migrating to New Systems

On Tuesday, June 14, 2022 the IT Help Desk will transition to a new ticketing and knowledge base platform. support.lanecc.edu will take you to the new platform after the transition. All knowledgebase articles for Academic Technology and the Student Helpdesk (SHeD) have been migrated and are currently available at the following temporary web address: lanecc.helpjuice.com.

⭐ Demo and Test Your Moodle Course As A Student

Since the removal of the student "impersonate" function nearly a year ago, we've been struggling to come up with ways that allow instructors to test drive their own courses without compromising student privacy. Through a combination of adding and switching roles, we've discovered that it can provide instructors several benefits, including:

  • Grade yourself and view grade book setup more accurately before the course starts.
  • Take quizzes and receive automatic grading.
  • Test various activities and get a more accurate view that students would receive.
  • Test out and complete your own activities to make sure everything is working before launching your classes.
  • Confirm that “activity completion” and “restrict access” options are working as desired. For example, if you submit an assignment it stays and meets the completion requirements and allows any downstream “restrict access” requirements to be met.
  • Test email notifications (something is submitted, graded, etc.)

For instructions on how to do this in your own courses, check out our help article!

📱 Update to Moodle Mobile App

A updated version of the Moodle Mobile App quietly became available at the end of April. While most instructional functions are still best accomplished via a web browser (desktop or mobile), an increasing number of students have found the dedicated Moodle app useful for accessing course calendars, due dates, and completing short activities. The update adds a more unified appearance with navigation elements in Moodle 4.0 rolling out site wide in 2023 and is available to all iOS and Android users through their respective App stores.

🎓 Change is in the Air - Moodle 4.0 is coming to Lane in 2023!

It's been seven years since the last major Moodle update and lots of great improvements are due to be rolled out in 2023. We're making preparations and learning everything we can about the changes. Users will be relieved that most core activities will function the same even if the user interface (the way things look and how you navigate) appears slightly different. Visit the Official Moodle 4.0 and LaneCC's launch website for additional details.

Check out the Moodle 4.0 Mount Orange School demo site, a demo site with many existing activities you can explore and adapt. Use the teacher login (username = teacher/password = moodle), keep in mind the site is reset every hour so you won't be able to save your work, but you will be able to preview the new layout, grade book, settings, and more!

📋 Polls: Thank you for your valuable feedback!

We had 124 responses to an LMS Survey and 105 responses to an Academic Technology Program Survey. Over the summer, individuals and groups within Academic Technology will be reviewing the results and recommendations made. Compiled results from the LMS survey will be shared with the ASIG LMS committee and faculty in the fall.

Any Last "Metacourse" Requests for Summer?

A Metacourse allows you to combine enrollments from multiple course sections into a single Moodle shell — reducing the need to duplicate resources, activities, etc. in multiple sections. Submit a meta course request or contact the ATC (atc@lanecc.edu) for assistance.
